Should Age = Respect?

Writer's picture: mahakshdalalmahakshdalal

I'm sure everyone has heard the phrase "respect your elders" at least once in the early stages of their life. But should one's older date of birth really warrant respect? Given some time to reflect on this, I came to a conclusion of "to a certain extent."

It is generally assumed that wisdom and intelligence come with age, respectable traits which are regarded highly among others. However, in this current age of information, I don't think wisdom and intelligence should be the sole reason to warrant respect. In my opinion, respect should only be given if it is reciprocated. I'll give you an example as to why. Let's say there's an older gentleman, around the age of sixty, who is well educated and has received a Ph.D. However, when you sit down to talk to him and get to know him, you find out he is quite rude and impatient. Does this man deserve your respect? Most people would probably answer no. Now, let's say there is a young boy, very active and energetic, who loves to be around you and holds you in high regard. In many cases, this young boy would probably be more respected than the older man, and the primary reason? He seems to be a better human being.

So for this reason, I think age, wisdom, and intelligence should not be the sole factors determinant of respect, but the question, "Is he a good human?" should be one of the main reasons as well.

Please let me know what you think about this in the comments!

Thanks!
