Review of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a hack-and-slash game developed by Koei Tecmo Games in collaboration with Nintendo. It is supposed to be a prequel to Nintendo's critically acclaimed open-world game, the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which received perfect scores from many critics, including the Game of the Year award in 2017. I got Age of Calamity a day after its launch, and I was pretty hyped up to play it.

Gameplay-wise, it is a few steps above your average hack-and-slash game, having Breath of the Wild themed weapons such as runes and elemental rods, and a wide assortment of characters with their own unique attack patterns to master, conversely to Breath of the Wild, in which you only get to play as the main protagonist, Link.

In terms of story, I was a bit disappointed that, despite being set 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild, it is non-canon; instead Koei Tecmo decided to make their own storyline by the easiest, laziest way possible: a timeline split. However, the cutscenes and the storyline are pretty interesting, and it's fun to watch Zelda's character develop throughout the game.

As games go, Age of Calamity is not a bad game, however, as a Breath of the Wild prequel, it disappoints me. I'm not sure what I was expecting from a Warriors game, but I didn't feel the same sense of awe and silent tragedy I loved feeling when I played Breath of the Wild. Breath of the Wild is such a game that you will probably find new secrets and things to do in the vast open-world even after 200 hours in the game. However, Age of Calamity is only fun for the first 25-ish hours of gameplay, and each side mission just feels well....the same.

However, one positive of Age of Calamity is the multiplayer mode, in which you get to co-op with a partner to complete a mission. My sister and I enjoyed this mode very much, especially because my sister needs a bit of hand-holding when it comes to video games.

My recommendation is, if you enjoyed Breath of the Wild, don't get this game. You'll probably be disappointed. However, as I said, as games go, it's not a bad game. Overall, it probably deserves a 7/10.
